Stuttgart and Hohenheim

Stuttgart, the state capital of the federal state Baden-Württemberg, is located in the south of Germany in a basin-shaped valley. Surrounded by hills, forests, gardens, fields and vineyards, Stuttgart offers its visitors as well as its nearly 600,000 citizens a great variety of culture, sports and shopping facilities. Public parks and recreation areas in Stuttgart cover an area of 5.6 square kilometers.
Symbols of Stuttgart´s cultural diversity are the State Art Gallery, the Opera House, the Ballet Company, the Theatre House, the Friedrichsbau Varieté as well as the Musical Hall.
Superb views over the entire city can be enjoyed from the world´s first TV tower, that was built between 1954 and 1956 with a total height of 217 m.

The core of Stuttgart´s city centre is the Palace Square with its
30 m-Jubilee column erected in 1841 to commemorate the silver jubilee of King Wilhelm I of Württemberg´s government. The New Palace with its 365 rooms was built from 1746 to 1806, commissioned by Duke Carl Eugen, but almost completely destroyed in the Second World War before being rebuilt.

Without doubt, the center and landmark of Hohenheim University is Hohenheim Palace, a Baroque palace complex that was built between 1771 and 1793 for Duke Carl Eugen of Württemberg and his wife Franziska of Hohenheim. Since 1818, Hohenheim is Seat of the State Agricultural College founded by King Wilhelm I of Württemberg. Today, about 5,200 students attend the internationally renowned Hohenheim university that holds partnerships with institutions in more than 90 countries all over the world. Both basic as well as practical applied research is pursued at Hohenheim´s five special research institutions: the Center of Entrepreneurship, the Life Science Center, the Eastern Europe Center, the Center for Agriculture in the Tropics and Subtropics as well as the Euroleague for Life Sciences.

Germany´s largest zoological and botanical gardens are located in a historical park. Once arranged for King Wilhelm I of Württemberg between 1842 and 1853 as a Moorish Garden, today the Wilhelma houses amongst others a famous orchid collection, giant magnolias, exemplary enclosures and glass houses together with a world-famous ape and monkey-keeping, an aquarium inhabited by animal species from all over the world, a big area for African hoofed animals and an old, endangered breed of domestic animals.

The PF 2006 congress will be located at Hohenheim University in Stuttgart´s South. The campus surrounded by the famous Botanical and Exotic Gardens, the German Agricultural Museum, the Museum of Hohenheim History and the Museum for Zoology and Veterinary Medicine, all of them being accessible to the public.
